Dustin Lance Black is a screenwriter and playwright from California. Perhaps best known for writing the screenplay of Milk, for which he won a Writers Guild of America award, and an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, he also wrote the screenplay for J. Edgar, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Black is the playwright behind 8, a piece of verbatim theatre which depicts the closing arguments of a 2010 federal trial that sought to strike down a constitutional amendment, Proposition 8, which had removed the right to marry from same-sex couples in the state of California.
